I have always put a premium on education. I completed a BS in Mechanical Engineering in India, and was the first person from my family to attend college.  Soon after immigrating to the US (California) in 1970, I completed a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State University. My education allowed me to become a Principal/Senior Nuclear Engineer at General Electric.

I have worked with several major private companies (General Electric, Progress Energy etc.), City of San Jose, State of North Carolina, and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission where I have collaborated with people from all walks of life, ethnicity and income.  I have significant experience with managing projects and seeing them through.

I retired from General Electric in 2012.

Volunteer Work at School

I have two grand children attending public schools in Castro Valley. Their education is so important to me that I have been volunteering at Jensen Ranch Elementary School and diligently attending PTA meetings and participate in the PTA events for over four years. Quite often, the teacher's request me to volunteer for reading fluency, school library and the computer labs. I will always be there for them.  I do it to help improve the young students educational experience. I believe strong elementary education builds a stronger foundation for students.

Volunteer Work in the Community

I am a mentor and merit badge counselor for my grandson’s Boy Scout Troop 789 in Palomares Hills Community in Castro Valley.  The guidance and encouragement for our scouts to earn higher ranks encourages them to earn their maximum potential. This will inevitably lead to creating wonderful Citizens and future leaders.  I have been serving as executive member on the Community of Palomares Hills Safety and Common Areas Committees for over three years as well.

MY FAMILY

My wife and myself live here in Palomares Hill Community in Castro Valley. We have two sons Amit and Ajay.  Ajay with his wife Karina resides in Costa Mesa, California. Amit, Seema and their two sons Akshay and Ashir have been residing in Five Canyons Community in Castro Valley since 2004. Ajay and Amit attended public schools in Maryland and North Carolina.

My son Ajay Gupta was appointed by President Barack Obama as Senior
Advisor to The Administrator for Center for Medicare and Medical Services in 2012. Currently he has been working at Evolution Health.

My son, Dr. Amit Gupta, MD has been working at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. He has been participating in several committees in the Castro Valley Unified School District.

My younger grandson Akshay is in 5th grade at the Jensen Ranch Elementary School in Castro Valley.

My older grandson Ashir is in 10th grade at the Castro Valley High School in Castro Valley.

1.
School Spending

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools.  What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?

Answer from Suresh C. Gupta:

I would ensure spending is done as planned. I would call for a special board meeting, invite community members (teachers, parents and other community members) and explain funding and how spending will be done and monitored.  A current example is the recent passage of Measure G.  We would of course create an interest group composed of the relevant parties to manage and track outcomes for the new funding.  There would be periodic meetings to present work and outcomes.

I would like to see as many students as possible complete high school and pursue higher education to maximize their potential. We all know there are students who struggle for a variety of reasons and even drop out from high school. As a board member, I would help reduce gap achievement and minimize the student dropout rate.

Diversity

Castro Valley consists of students of many different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is the diversity that provides both opportunities and challenges. I have worked with several major private companies, city, state and federal governments where I have collaborated with people from all walks of life, ethnicity and income.  I have significant experience with managing projects and seeing them through.  As board member, I hope to share my life experiences and thoughts to increase access to all students in our district.

Community Involvement

I am a mentor and merit badge counselor for my grandson’s Boy Scout Troop 789 in Palomares Hills Community in Castro Valley.  The guidance and encouragement for our scouts to earn higher ranks encourages them to earn their maximum potential. This will inevitably lead to creating wonderful Citizens and future leaders.  I have been serving as executive member on the Community of Palomares Hills Safety and Common Areas Committees for over three years as well. I would seek to ensure that good measures are taken by CVUSD regarding administrative positions, positive teacher relations, and active parental involvement through better communication with the community.

Financial

I would seek to ensure classroom spending is done for offering better education, various elective courses in science, art, music, and vocational activities for students.  Extra resources will continue to be allocated for low-income, English as a second language (ESL), and students with special needs to lower gap achievement. As a nuclear engineer, I value a strong science and math curriculum, but I understand that a well-rounded education includes literature/language, sports, art and music.  We are trying to assist in the development of accomplished, respectable young adults.  Personally, I have two grandchildren attending public schools in Castro Valley. I regularly experience the positive impact a strong school community makes on students in leading them to a path of success.

Safety of Students and Staff

With so much happening in schools around our nation, we always need to ensure safety and security of students, teachers and CVUSD staff. As a board member, I would ensure safety and security programs are enforced in each school in collaboration with local law and enforcement organizations.
