Questions & Answers

Questions from LWV Fremont Newark Union City (3)

What are your plans for providing more affordable housing?
Answer from Marty Froomin:

We have to work with developers to provide affordable housing. Be aware that many people think that this may make things easier for the people who work for the City. Unfortunately, there are two things to consider. First, do people who work for the City want to live in the city? There are many who would prefer to live else where. Second, do people who work for the city qualify for affordable housing? Probably not. There are some that believe that the city can build housing for city employees to live. What they are not considering is that if we, as a city, are providing housing, what happens to that persons wages. Providing housing would certainly be a benenfit that they should pay for. I do not believe the City Council should get into the real estate market. Our focus should be on maintaining the city services for all of its residents.

What is your plan to deal with unfunded liabilities such as pensions and deferred maintenance on roads?
Answer from Marty Froomin:

The Finance Director for the city, in conjunction with an Actuary, have devised a plan to pay off the undunded liability over the next 20 years. I would like to see if there is a way to find money in the budget that can be saved in other areas and moved to pay off this debt faster.

What do you believe is the responsibility of city council members when it comes to education and schools?
Answer from Marty Froomin:

The responsibility of education and schools belongs to the school district. We should definitely work with the school district to address issues that affect our community.

Questions from LWV Fremon Newark Union City (1)

What are your ideas for reducing traffic congestion on main roads?
Answer from Marty Froomin:

Traffic flows like water, when there is congestion, it will find a way to flow. Unfortunately, the problem is not with residents of our city but rather people who live elsewhere that are passing through. We should work with regional entities to find a way to relive traffic congestion on 880 and 680.  One thought is to try and get those people who are commuting from other cities to move to our city to shorten their commute.
